MILITARY APPEAL BOARD.
TAIHAPE APPEAL CASES. Jf h l HrSt Wdllngton Militarv Service Board, presided over by Mr! D. G. .A. Cooper, S.M., sat in the Taibapa - J«se>teraay, and disposed of souie do.cn and a *alf t oxg to the f ront 8o;ae of • 2 " ° Dly askcd f or time to dhous of their property and safely invest the proeeeos, while others thought there ve IC Mready plenty ut the fr<mt .^ vU «" ir "°t Soi°B was not a matter of any consequence. Unfortunately for the latter they could not persuade the So-d to see eye to eye with them. It Voems that members of the Board are getting much more familiar with their work if a spice of contempt is any proof thereof. Just a little of the aforetime brilliance has been rubbed off Captain Walker, or he wasn't in good goino- order, several sine dies getting past him. The father of one appellant, w is asked why he couldn't look after his farm, and do the milking so that his son could go and fight for both of them, «nd when he replied that he had his knee «ut out, and could not milk with a le<» like that, the chairman of the Board asked whether he milked with his leg, and Captain Walker didn't smile. One ballotted mail thought he should be excused because he had a brother at the front. Mr. David McLaren, erstwhile .Labour leader, volunteered that the information that while the Board was setting somewhere in Taranaki a case ran up against it in which eleven brothers and their father were all at the front. The appellant in the box looked serious and said, "They must be Scotch.' 7 Captain Walker complimented oneman by telling him lie was a fine, sol-dierly-looking man, and that he would not like to miss him. The appellant saw the disguised insinuation and indignantly repudiated any suggestion that he didn't want to go> to the frontHe was ready to go as soon as he could dispose of his stock and make arrange* ments for the care of his land. That time the Board gave and the man retired quite satisfied. There were one or two who brought with them a tired feeling, but on the whole the Court was
by. no means a dispiriting seeanee; - chips of wit,,were frequent from bench. boS, and'baw_.an4-^pjiee. the.-.attendants i in-the loudly applaud- j appellants. _; Business did not First- ■' al briskness".'
