Details of the assassination of a young native of Lille, the son of Dr. Nanheuversuyn, have just come to hand. Charles Nanheuversuyn, aged eighteen, was deported from his native town last April. His sister had been designated for exile by the Gormans, and he offered .to sacrifice himself and go in her stead. The Germans agreed, and he was transported to Hamel, where lie and his companions were asived to make hurdles of rushes for the construction of trenches. They refused. They wer c taken to Turcoing and imprisoned in a factory there. On November 2 one young man was taken ill. Young Nanheuversuyn got up, lighted a pocket lamp, and began to busy himself with his sick friend. The officer in charge observed the light and scolded the young man, who replied with a lack of ''proper, respect.” Whereupon the German officer rushed at him with his bayonet and pierced his chest. As the boy did not expire quickly enough to please the officer he beat him to death with the butt end of a rifle.
