TAIHAPE DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL

COMMITTEE MEETING

The usual monthly meeting of the - Taihape District High School Committee was held last night. Present: Messrs. A. J. Jobbin (chairman) nan, Denness, Do Loree, McLaughlafl,Burrell (secretary), and Lovell.

The Chairman, in a few well-chosen, remarks, congratulated the old members of the committee on their re-election, and extended a welcome to the new ones. The headmaster’s report was read. The roll number at the primary department of the_ school is 333, while the average for last week was 313 At the secondary department there arc now 25 on the roll, while 23 attend the Will iat a side school. Miss McDonnell ( infant mistress) is away on sick leave, in whose place Mrs Broughton is relieving. Miss Little is also absent through illness. The headmaster suggested that the committee should purchase a few plane trees later on in the year to plant between the Technical School and the horse paddock. He also brought under the notice of the committee the desirability of cutting out some of the trees around the school residence, and putting the paths An order, he offering to contribute £1 TOs towards the cost of this work.

The Chairman said he had inspected the trees, and was of opinion they could be thinned out with advantage,, thereby allowing more sunlight to penetrate. With regard to the footpaths* they were also in need of repair, and would take about three yards of fine metal to put in order. Roughly, he ostimated the cost of carrying out the headmaster’s .suggestions at about £5.

After some discussion it was decided to leave the matters in the hands of the chairman to deal with.

The question of planting trees between the Technical School and the horse paddock was referred to the visiting committee to report on. The secretary (who has a keen eye' for a subsidy or a donation) remarked that if it was decided to plant the treeshe knew where he could got a donation of them from a nursery firm. Sergeant-Major De Loree and the secretary were appointed the visiting committee for the mouth. Accounts for. £5 (Mrs Botfield) for cleaning -the ..school, .and £1 to Mr. Beattie for carting firewood were passed for payment

Just before the meeting closed the chairman congratulated the committee on the successful and expeditious manner. in which the business had been transacted, and said it augured well the coming twelve months. The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks to the chair.
