BRITISH SALONIKA REPORT. LONDON, May 11. The High Commissioner reports: A British Salonika report states that on Wednesday night, after a heavy bombard,inent, the enemy attacked our new positions south-west of Krastali, and obtained a temporary footing on Goldie's Hill, an advanced post in front of the centre of .this* line.:! A British report from Salonika states: Our aeroplanes.. carried out four successful bombing .raids, dropping a quantity of explosives on dugouts, dumps, and transport columns. A Bulgarian communique, dealing with the latest account of the fighting west and north of Monastir singles out the "British attacks south of Doiran, which are described as persistent, four being made between 9. in the evening and four in the morning. They admit the British. , twice penetrated portions of their line, but asserts they were ejected by counter-attacks. TRENCHES TAKEN. STRONG COUNTER-ATTACK.

British official.—AfteT several days' artillery fire we attacked th e trenches south-west of Lake Doiran on a fourmile front, and captured on our left trenches and two miles in length with a depth of 500« yards. \y c consolidated the positions. We captured, on the xight trenches a mile long between Lake Petit Couronne. The enemy, however, heavily counter-attacked,, on this part of the front. After determined fighting we were forced back by superior numbers.
THE SERBIAN CAMPAIGN LONDON, May 10. A Serbian communique states that the enemy bombed Monastir with asjmyxiating shells. There were considerable civilian casualties. SERBIAN AND RUSSIAN PROGRESS.

A French Macedonian communique says: In the region of Vetrenitch on the upper valley of the Moglenitza, the Serbs captured two, points d'appui in the Ccrna bend. e The Russians captured some trenches by assault on the Vardar. DISTRESS IN BAVARIA. LONDONN, May 11. A Berne wireless states: Hein, a leader in the Bavarian Chamber, made a speech at Neustadt. He said that 70 per cent, of the male population of 2837 Bavarian villages above the age of 17 were serving with the army; 37 per cent, of the farms were without male labourers; the harvest of 1916 was the worst on record, owing primarily to a lack of labour, and a similar disaster; in 1917 was threatened for the same reason. , '
