Received 10.10. WASHINGTON, May 11. The Italians in three weeks in the Mediterranean sank, thirteen Austrian submarines. ,< CLAIMS OF APRIL SINKING. AMSTEEDAM, May 10. Admiral von Capelle, Secretary to the Navy, speaking on the Naval Estimates in the Reichstag, says that the Admiralty had expected to sink 600,000 tons of merchantmen in a month, but over 1,100,000 had been destroyed during April. The losses of submarines were unexpectedly small, while the crews were'greatly increasing in experience. COUNTERING THE U-BOATS NEW YORK, May 10. Admiral Sir Dudley de Chair, Commander of the Tenth Cruiser Squadron, who accompanied Mr. Balfour to America, in a speech 'here, said that British experts held high'promise of success.for, their anti-submarine devices. He was confident that the necessary antidote would be found. Hence-forth-the British and [American experts would work conjointly, and decisive results must be. obtained.. Early tests have been arranged. The invention is designed for offensive operations, and experts are investigating as to whether favourable results can be repeated on a. broad scale in the deep sea.
