"PROSPECTS LOOK TERRIBLE." LONDON, May 1. Router's correspondent at the British Headquarters in. France, telegraphing to-day gives translations of captured enemy correspondence referring to th«e effects of artillery fire. A German sergeant-major of the Reserve Infantry writes: — "The English have been firing gasshells for days. What a gruesome sight are the trenches, which have been shot to pieces. The prospects look terrible.'' A maehinc-gun junior officer writes: — "Three of my gun crew and an orderly went for rations, but failed to return. Our detachment now consists of only three men. We have eaten nothing for two days." A Bavarian observation officer in the course of a letter, said: —"The English fire is so well directed that the whole of the front trenches, also the communication trenches, have been blown to bits. The enemy aerial activity is extraordinarily fearless. Our observation machines are immediately chased away by the, English."
