AMERICA’S BIG EFFORT,
TO HELP THE ALLIES,
WASHINGTON, May 4,
The Federal Reserve banks are undertaking work hitherto transacted by Mr J. P. Morgan in purchasing supplies for the Allies. The banks are about to float a loan of £400,000,000 sterling through Cunliff. Arrangements have been made with the Bank of England wherby a mutual interchange of services will be possible. Mr Lever announces that Great Britain is spending £1,400,000 sterling in the United States daily on munitions and war supplies.
INTER-ALLIES’ CONFERENCES

The Inter-Allies Joint Conference has sat for the past four days, and settled most of the important matter. WASHINGTON. May 6.
The first Allies’ American War Conference has discussed the proposed expeditionary force, but no decision has been reached.
MR. BALFOUR VISITS HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. Received 9.25. WASHINGTON, May 6. The British commissioners visited the House of Representatives. Mr Balfour in a speech eulogised America’s entrance into the war to assist to overthrow the German design to dominate civilisation, and received a great ovation. Mr Balfour subsequently received a Home Rule deputation, who urged a settlement for Ireland. He promised to cable the views to London.
The Liberty Loan subscriptions are now twenty million dollars hourly.
