WHAT FREE MEN CAN DO. SHOWN BY THE EMPIRE. LONDON, May 1. In a speech delivered in London today General J. C. Smuts said: — “Britain’s critics before the war said that the country was corrupted by Wealth, that we had grown soft, and that the day of test would find ns wanting. When the day of trial came we showed what free mem could do in the greatest conflict in the world, Britishers arc the financial, moral, and in a great sense the military mainstay of the whole alliance. The enemy calculated upon apathy, even disruption, among the free nations of the Commonwealth of Empire, but the Imperial free men came forward and did their duty, not merely to help the mother country, but because they felt that when the liberty of Europe was endangered the liberty of all the Avorld was endangered. America had joined because this was a war of freedom against the slavery of a military despotism.”
