ANZAC DAY.
CELEBRATIONS IN LONDON,
LONDON, April 25,
Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Fisher, Lad Northeote, Lady Godley, and th } Agents-General attended the Anza memorial service at St. Paul’s. Th Bishop of Willesden, Dr. W. W. Pei , j rin, who preached, said that the Am - j at Gallijioli, though not vie torious, were not defeated. Whei histoiy was written the most wonder ful fact would be that before any sug gestion of conscription in Australia Canada, or England, millions volun teered for th e Empire. The blooc shed on Gallipoli and elsewhere made a real, instead of a nominal Empire, | At Westminster Cathedral, after the ! service, Cardinal Bourne held a reception. Mr. John McCall, AgentGeneral for Tasmania, presided and addressed Australian troops at the Anzac- Buffet. “Although our men are making a good record in France,” he said, “nothing they'had done cbuld dim the great deeds ot Gallipoli.” Seymour Hicks entertained* a large number of Australians and New ZeaI landers at the Prince’s Theatre. , Sir lan Hamilton, in unveiling a memorial to the Twenty-ninth Division in Eltham Church, told how the division fought incessantly on Gnllipoh. Its casualties were over thrice its full strength, but it was still ■ ing in Prance. No soldiers were’ more gallant, yet it w*s characteristic I of them that they did not mention their own deeds, but the-Anzacs’ bayonet charges. J I
