EDUCATION BOARD

The Education Board met on Wednesday evening. Present: Messrs. Fred Pirani (chairman), Alf Fraser, Joblin, Broad, Mclntyre, Christie, Hemingway, Collins, Sewell, Bryant. Application to be made to Detriment for funds for erection of school at Eaurimu.

E. G. Whishaw’s (Kangataua) complaint about the cancellation of his. daughter's free place for proficiency pass being cancelled because she was a few days over age on December 1, was beyond the Board’s power to rectify, but it was pointed out that if headmasters entered such pupils for the junior free place examination the difficulty would not arise. By paying a fee of 10s a quarter, however, the pupil would be able to travel free by rail. A short discussion took place in regard to the Lutheran school at Marton and the service held in Halcombs recently in German. The Chairman explained that the question of approving of the school, formerly in the power of the Board, was taken away by the last Education Act and vested in the Minister. He did not think that the Board would have countenanced the school under existing circumstances.

The report of Mr Joblin oW visits to Utiku, Umutoi, Kaheke, Waituna West, Bluff road, Karewarewa, Mangarimu. Ridge road,, Euahine, Cheltenham, Upper Kawatau, Coal Creek, and Kawhatau schools was received and the recommendations agreed to. In regard to school books, the following motion passed at the conferences between teachers and inspectors -was endorsed by the Board: That at the 'end of the present year the Progressive Arithmetics be substituted for the Pacific Arithmetics at present in use. That then the Pacific Readers -which have been condemned in other districts be discontinued and no other miscellaneous reader be substituted except in. the infant classes.” In explanation it was pointed out that the reading-books for standard classes would thus be the School Journal and the Continuous Reader —both supplied free. In arithmetic more than any other subject the pupils need the best books procurable.

Leave of absence was granted Miss B. McDonell, Taihape. Removal expenses were granted to H. C. Fenton (£4 5s (id) and H. Hamilton (£4 15s 2d), of Turangarcre and Moraouhald respectively.
