DELAY IN CASUALTY RETURNS. GENERAL RICHARDSON ’S REPORT ‘ ' WELLINGTON, March 27. General Richardson has advised the Minister for Defence, after visiting France to inquire into the cause of the delay in clearing up untraced casualties, that the delay was due to‘ the units concerned, and not to the reco~rds sys tem. The fact that some units cleared up their casualties quickly, showed that

others could minimise the delay.

AMALGAMATION OF WORKERS. WELLING'I‘ON, March 27. ‘As a result of the Australasian organisers visit to New Zealand with the ‘object of securing the closer organisation of the men employed in the meat industry, a conference of delegates representing all sections of the meat and allied trades assembled at Wellington to—day. There were 51 present. Mr John Rigg presided. A resolution was adopted “That this conference afiirms the desirability of amalgamation.” A committee was appointed to Graft constitution, and the conference adjourned until tomorrow.

BIG FIRE AT NELSON. NELSON, March 27. The most disastrous fire that has occurred in Nelson for many years broke out in a block of wooden shops in Trafalgar St. to-night. The premises of Lightband and Co. (boot and shoe importers), Jackson and Co., Ltd. (book sellers and stationers), and W. C. Ansell (chemist), were entirely destroyed, as were also the bulk stores of Buxton and Co., Ltd. (ironmoners and general merchants) running behind the premises mentioned. Buxton's main building (a large brick structure, separated from Jackson's by a narrow right-of-way) was for a long time in great danger, fire repeatedly breaking into the"'top floor. The strenuous efforts of the brigade, however, prevented the spread of the flames in this direction. Home of Ansell's stock was got out. The damage will run into many thousands, but estimate have not yet been arrived at. Details of insurances are not available to-night, but those on Lightband's stock and Jackson's and Co.'s building and stock are all in the Alliance, and Buxton's in the New Zealand offices.
