THE ROTORUA TORPEDOED
ONE LIFE LOST. CHRISTCHURCH, March 20. Following upon advice confirming the loss 'of the Company’s steamer Otaki, the New Zealand Shipping Company has been adivsed that its steamer Rotorua was torpedoed and sunk in the English Channel shortly after resuming her voyage from Plymouth, where all her passengers were landed. Captain Sutcliffe and all of the crew were saved, with the exception of one cook. The Rotorua and Otaki are valued at £1,000,000 independent of thein cargoes. The Rotorua was one of the newest and finest vesels in the New Zealand Shipping Company’s fleet, and w T as as well known in the passenger as in the cargo trade. She was a triple-screw vessel of 11,130 tons, built in 1910 by Denny and Bros..* Dumbarton, and was 484 feet in length, with a beam of 62 feet Her engines consisted of twin triple-expansion, sets, and one lowpressure steamturbine, and; she was also. fitted with a large refrigerating plant. Her sea speed,was 14 knots.
