MEAT TRADE.
PROBLEM AT PALMERSTON. ' PRICES FIXED BY BOARD OF TRADE. ' REDUCTIONS OF SOME CUTS. The conference between the Board of Trade and the butchers of Palmerston concerning the price of meat, resulted in a reduction in the price of certain classes of meat.
The rates agreed upon are to remain In force for a period of three months, and no changes can be made in respect to increases until there has been a consultation with the Board of Trade.
The Board does not propose at present to apply the scheme of selling to butchers off the Imperial books to Palmerston, as the retail scale agreed upon does not justify the change. There is a further difficulty in that the local abattoirs have just been municipalised, and if these were closed, as has been done in Masterton, there would be a considerable loss to the Borough Council. The new scale of prices allows for a reduction on some of the cuts and for the retention of the present rates in other cases. No increases have been allowed. The new scale will operate as from Monday week,, April 2, and will be strictly for cash over the Counter only.
