TENNIS NOTES
Owing to. the inability of the Ohakune East Tennis Club to get a full team to visit Taihape, the match to have been played on Saturday did not take place. In lieu of the above matclx,an American tournament was held at flfle Taihape Courts, the following pairs taking part: Mrs Ongley and Ongley (10 .behind scratch). Miss J. Smith and -jEhmlop (9 behind), Miss Little and Kirechbeng (5 behind), Miss W Spooner and Munro (5 behind), Mrs Neagle and Blackie (scratch), Misses Gillette and O’ Callaghan (scratch), Mrs O’ Callaghan and O’Callaghan seur., (5 points), Miss Kennedy and Laurie, Ohakune (5), Mrs Wakeman and Kidson, Ohakune (5). Mrs Cannons and Cannons (10). The games were 16 points up. A very pleasant afternoon’s sport resulted, and it is safe to say that interest and keenness in play was never before so noticeable on the Taihape courts Every player entered into the spirit oi the contests'as if the winning of th( Davis Cup rested on their play. Matches were in progress continuous ly from 2 p.m. until dark, and for onc< that important item afternoon tea wai almost forgotten in the excitement o: competition.
Generally speaking play was not up b the usual practice standard, cveryom more or less, being somewhat nervy.
Such tournaments will do a lot t( improve play and fit players fo: matches, and profiting by experiene gained on Saturday similar tournament will be a feature in future.
A pleasing feature of the afternoon play was the excellent, sporting spi *' displayed by all players, pair taking their defeat like true Britisher An entry fee was paid by each pah the money so collected being hande over to the promoters of the Plunkt Society’s Garden Party. Afternoon tea was provided by a
lady members. Miss McDonnell actin in the capacity of officer-in-eharge c this department. The courts wei o-naced during the afternoon by severs lady visitors and ex-members of th club.
When the afternoon’s play was coi plcted it was found that Mrs Cannoj and Mr Cannons and Mrs Wakeman ar Mr Kid son were equal with a full pi centage of wins; Mrs Xeagle and ft
Blackic were next with four wins, ar Miss Kennedy and Mr Laurie finish* fourth with three wins. The other pai: finished in a bunch with two wins eac.
The handicap pars wore too lenie with tlic limit pairs, and as a result t' scratch pairs had too much leeway make up in such a short game. Mr Dunlop,, Secretary of the Palme) ton Club, played prominently throng out, and rendered much assistance the committee. Jn view of the success of the tourn ment a similar function will bo he next Saturday. In this instance, ho ever, pairs will be drawJgfcistead nominated. Play will commence ai p.m. sharp, and all players intending take part must notify the handicapp« before Wednesday next, as handies and pairs will be published early. |
