BOWLING NOTES.
HUEN CHALLENGE CUP. DESCRIPTION OF THE GAME. The following is a description of the game—head by head —between St. John’s (Wanganui) and the Taihapc team, played on the local gneen on Thursday afternoon: — Ist Head —Scriviner led off, and laid the shot with his second bowl, James’ first and second made 2 up, Galatly shot second bowl, Gordon r s first made it 2 up, and third bowl 3 up. Wrightson made a very fine shot, and carried kitty with his second, but St. John’s still laid the shot —St. John’s 1, Taihape 0. 2nd Head —Scrivener led a good one within a foot, Laughton's first made it 2, but James’ first reduced it to I, and his second laid shot. Gordon drove and cut out James bowl, and made 2 up—--3—o.
3rd Head —The skips left St. John’s 1 up. Wrightson played a beautiful run, but the kitty struck the bowl, St. John’s laid 2 when Wrightson made a splendid draw and laid the shot —3 —l.
4th Head —On a long head, Drayton drew within a foot, and James’ second made 2. Laughton drove kitty to. ditch, and laid shot, making Taihape 2. 3 —3. Jth Head —Leads started badly, James, with his second, drew a good one; Gelatly played to rest, but was not strong enough. Gordon, with a good one rested shot bowl, and laid 3, making the score 6 —3. 6th Head —Drayton played a “toucher,” and rested within a foot. Gordon did not alter the position; and the head finished. 6—4.
7lh Head —Drayton started with a good one, and with his second drew kitty to his first; James dr.ew a third, but Laughton drew dead on kitty. Evans played a good one w r ith his third, and shifted kitty; Wrightson drove and laid 1. Gordon drew the shot, and with his second made St. John’s 3 up. 9 —4
Bth Head —Drayton drew and laid ■within a foot. It remained the shot until the skips left, when Wrightson dnew dead on kitty. Gordon failed to alter the lead, leaving Taihape 2 up. 9—6.
9th Head —Lead drew wide and short, and Drayton laid shot. Evans with his first drew a third; Galatly drew aim made a measure in St. John’s favour. This was a very underspent head, the nearest bowl being three feet off. Gordon drove, and carried kitty to ditch, and registered 2. 11 —6. 10th Head—ln this head was made the biggest score of the contest. When the skips left, St. John’s laid 3, which Gordon’s first increased to 4, and his second to 5. Wrightson’s second touched the shot bowl, but failed to stop, and St. John’s laid 5. 16 6. 11th Head—Scrivener with his first played a good bowl, but Drayton beat him, and laid shot. Evans’ was a very fine, firm one, and rested, shot, laying two. Galatly cut Taihape out of one. Wrightson failed to draw Kitty with his first, but with his second rested shot, and laid 2. 16—S.
12th Head—Leads were a little strong James, with his second, dnew dead to Kitty —Taihape 1, St. John’s 3 seconds. Evans with his first laid second shot, and with his second laid 3. Wrightson played for position, and the head ended with Taihape 3 up. 16 —11.
13th Head—This was an interesting head, with Taihape “hard after it,” but at the finish St. John’s laid 1. 17— 11. 14th Hoad —A shower of rain, which fell at this stage, made the green a bit heavy and difficult to gauge. St. John 's were not to bo denied, and the score was increased to IS—ll. 15th Head —Scrivener drew shot with his second, and James rested shot bowl, but failed to stop. Evans with his first drew shot, which Galatly rested with his first. Evans narrowly missed trailing kitty, and St. John's held one. Gordon played for position at back, and Wrightson missed kitty, and with his second glanced off front ball, and left St. John’s 1 up. 19—11. Kith Head —Scrivener drew shot, and Laughton’s first carrdec* kitty, held it there., and laid one; when skips left St. John’s wms 1 up. Gordon’s first drew second position. Wrightson played a run, shifted kitty and got one. Gordon ’$ first missed shot bowl, and left Taihape 1 and Wrightson a bowl in hand. In trying to take the nearest bowl for 3, glanced off his object,, taking Taihape’s second and third, and left Taihape still one. 19 —12.
17th Head —Taihape was now hard after it, playing a good uphill game. Drayton laid 2, and James added 2 for Taihape (4 up). Evans blocked on the wing, and Wrightson’s first played to hold by block. Gordon found the position very awkward, and failed to alter, Taihape holding the four at a very critical stage. 19—16. 18th Head—Seriviner drew shot, but Drayton trailed kitty and laid shot, Scrivener with his second boat it, and James rested shot, but not firmly enough, and did not alter. Evans drew shot,, and Galatly played a beauty, but just failed. St. John's position was good, and Gordon tried to shift kitty for 3 or 4. He made a good but futile attempt, and Taihape laid 1. 19 —17.
19th Hoad —Drayton’s first shot was good. Seniviner failed by inches to beat it. Drayton's second was jack high, hut wide. Scrivener’s second was yards strong, but & good back bowl.
Laughton pushed Scrivener’s front bowl into shot, and counted wild ju d own, Galatly drew good, making tst. John’s 3. Wrightson tried to trail, bifjyffiid. not strike it. Gordon was a bit strong but trailed kitty, and luckily held three,. 22—17.
20th Head,' —Scrivener’s second dnewr shot, but nmiyioii wiui lus second trailed ana laia snot. .nu. 2dm not alter position. St. John’s tried to trail kitty to bunch at back, which, if successful would have meant six. V» riglxtson drew a good position bowl at bacit. Gordon, with a goodrftfive, took out shot bowl, and laid on h. 23—17. 21 st Head, and final —Taihape were not yet beaten, though they required 5 to tie, and 6 to. win. Scrivener drew short with both bowls. Drayton drew to kitty„ and his second drew a littie strong, though a good back bowl. Evans, who hau been playing with hard luck, just failed to shift shot bowl or trail kitty to back bowls. Galatly drew another good one, but did not inciease Jthe score. Laughton’s and Scrivener’s short bowls proved invaluable as blocks, making the position very awkward for jWrightson. Gordon played shout to improve the block and hold one. Wrightson was now required to trail kitty for 6 to win, and although Ne played very fine shots, the front boWis hampered him, the position remaining unaltered, the final scone being i.4 —17.
