ST. PATRICK’S DAY SPORTS.

Horse Jumping events are specially well catered for at the St Patrick’s Hay Sports. With the jumps at Ruanui the Thursday previous, .•followed by the events- on St. Patrick’s Day, horsemen are receiving liberal treatment., this is only as it should bo, for such events have a commercial value, as well a sporting interest. Horsemen have been the mainstay of sports functions should receive every encouragement on in this district for many years, and programmes drawn up. If sufficient events appear on programmes it is worth while keeping a jumper in training. Apart from the cash prizes offered there are some valuable cups for competition. For the Maiden Jumping Competition there is Mr W. McLennan’s £3 3s cup for the Open Pony Jump, Mr E W. Smith’s £4 4s Challenge Cup, and for the Open Hunters’ Competition.Cap-tain-Chaplain Connolly's valuable Challenge Cup, valued at £lO 10s. AVith such liberal inducement, apart from ithe help to a patriotic cause, horsementaro sure to be present in large numbers, Other events to horseowners are the Ladies’ DrivingCompetition,best Child’s Pony ,and th e popular Stockman’s Race. The Ladies’ Driving Competition is an event new to Taihape sports or show goers, but it is an event that is eagerly contested in other parts, and we are quite certain that the Taihape horsewomen are not behind their sisters in other pa,rts. The best Child’s Pony must be ridden by a school child, for this event is intended in efect to be of special interest for children.
