SEVEN LIONS.
A remarkable vision of big game ig contributed by a member of the Calcutta \ olunteer Battery on his return after two years’ fighting in British East Africa:
“On one occasion, when the battery was crossing the Kapiti Plain, the men occupied the only water holes in the district. Towards evening the animals ®ame for their last drink, and it is estimated that at one time there must have been thousands of different kinds of deer, gnu, and zebras within rifle range. At another time the battery came across no fewer than seven lions. The animals were so dost- that one of the non-commissioned officers fired at them with his revolver, but needless to say, without any, casualties. These liens were lumted the next day by some planters, who shot them all.” Once the battery discovered rwo nests ol ostrict eggs, one containing fifty-five and the oFher eighteen of the brobdingnagian eggs. Ostrich omelettes and ostrich eggs scrambled consequently varied the menu for some days, the men scon becoming accustomed to the remarkable, and, at first, somewhat strong flavour.
