HANDS
Mr C. J. Stewart, the Public Trustee,, told the members of the City of London Tradesmen's Club in an address in December last that about £32,000,000 of enemy capital was in British companies; there was about £71,000,000 in property in this country held and managed on behalf of the enemy; and about £19,000,000 of debts over £SO and bank balances was due to the enemy, making a total of £122,000,000. "It is most important," he said, "that persons having any claim against the enemy, or any property in enemy countries should register it. We have received 30,000 claims, and they are coming in at the nate of about 150 per day. Some do not err on the side of modesty. One man has claimed £l5O as the cost of his journey back to Constantinople after the Avar. A lady claimed £SOOO for an unfinished manuscript of a novel which she was writing when she had to quit an enemy country. The. man who claimed £1,000,000 was quite ready to reduce it to £2500. "
