TAIHAPE SWIMMING CLUB.

A SUCCESSFUL MEETING. Favoured with fine weather a large crowd assembled at the Municipal Baths yesterday afternoon to witness the annual swimming sports held under the auspices of the Taihape Swimming Club. There were a good number of entries for each event, and the officials in charge deserve very commendation for the orderly and capable manner in which they conducted the events, the arrangements passing off without a hitch. The racing was close and interest j ing and altogether there was not a I dull moment throughout the afternoon. | The schoolboys' championship I proved a great event. Knox and Pine i having to swim the course four times before the judges could separate them. Pine's superior strength and stamina told in the last contest and he just j managed to beat Knox on the touch. The public were so pleaseu with the I exhibition of Knox's game swimming | that a collection was taken up on the | ground which resulted in the sum of nearly £2 being raised for the boy. ! An unadvertised event was caused by an elderly well-known resident becoming so excited during the course of one of the events that he fell in the water. Tony Smith effected a heroic ' rescue and the old gentleman on being i . pulled out seemed none the worse for iiis immersion.. ! The Red Cross Society provided afternoon tea at the baths during the sports at a minimum cost the sum of £5 5s being realised for their funds. A telegram was received by the secretary of the club from the Club's patron, J. F. Studholme, Esq.. regretting ■ his inability to" attend, and wishing the club every success.
