HOLD OUT!

GERMANS AND THE WINTER

The Frankfurter Zeitungj. in an article on “Holding Out,” concludes a passionate appeal to the nation as follows :

11 We know that we must limit our selves, and we shall do it in the consciousness that the sacrifices which we bring, although demanding stern heroism, arc as nothing to the sacrifices which arc being borne in the trenches, on the high seas* under the seas, or on the snow-bound mountains, by men who are giving their lives for ns and for our future. Therefore, wc must not. whisper and complain,, merely because wc must bear privations. The enemy is listening for every utterance and drawn hope from every exaggerated complaint that he will be able to defeat us. Lot us for this reason observe moderation in criticism, arid only criticise where it is necessary and where it helps to remove abuses.”

General von der Tann issued a desperate appeal to the Bavarian people to hold out bravely during the third war winter. H e tells the agricultural population that they are only trustees for the fruits of the field, and that they must not withhold grain, milk, potatoes, eggs and fat from the towns in order to live in comfort themselves. To the dwellers in the towns he says they must fight against the enemj in their midst and in their own hearts. He reproaches those who are accumulating supplies at the expense of their fellow citizens, and others who even bow could not forget the pleasures and wastefulness of the bad time before the war. And whoever does not listen to reason and honour would have to give way to force. “Therefore, hold cut till arms have gained the victory.
