POLICE AND THE BALLOT.

SUCCESSFUL APPEALS

WELLINGTON, Feb 13. At the Military Service Board to-day the Commissioner of Police appealed on behalf of four constables, a sergeant and a detective-sergeant. IBsaid that since he last appeal ed before the Board the numbers of the force had been still further decreased by about ten resignations. No new members had yet been sworn in to replace them. It was intended to take on some men for temporary service, but they would not come under the opeiation of the ballot. A number of members were approaching the retirement age. The cases were adjourned without date, provided appellants remain in their present employment.
