MILITARY SERVICE.
THE HOT FOOT SHIRKER.
Says tlic Feildiug “Stan”: Despite the assurance of the Department in this area that it has its eye on all slackers and shirkers, we arc assured by business men whose duties take them round and about the country districts, that there are men hereabouts who have so far evaded the call-up. They have managed it by “humping the bluey” -—carrying their swags from one district to another. “Gone —left no address.” Always moving on so. that they cannot ba caught. Working a week nr a month on one job and then clearing out to anothen. The great scarcity of labour facilitates this ducking and dodging from one district to another. It is time that some of our farmers were made to realise that there is a heavy penalty fon encouraging this sort of thing. Under the War Regulations Act it is the bounden duty of every man or woman, before employing a man between the ages of 20 and 46, to make him produce a Defence Department certificate showing that he had registered for service. If they do not demand such they are equally responsible with'the shirker, whom they should at once report to the Police or Defence Office.
