The State Department has received a message from the American Consul at Plymouth that the Housatonic had full warning and an opportunity afforded the crew to escape before being torpedoed. The news has relieved the tension. A New York financial correspondent states financiers regard war as inevitable, and declare the financial situation was never better. Wilson can raise any sum he likes in 24 hours. STOCKHOLM, Feb 4. Sweden demands from Germany an explanation of the submarining of the Edda. The situation is regarded as most serious.
