AUCKLAND, Jan. 20. Walter Preston, charged witiHgJait i being a bookmaker, lie made a bet at I Ellerslie racoeqursc on January 2nd,, pleaded guilty. The Chief Detectivestated that the defendant had a long list of gaming convictions, and mentioned that a fine of £75, imposed a j few months ago, was still unpaid. The magistrate imposed a fine of ! £IOO, in default three months. As defendant had no property upon which i distress could be made, an order was I made for an immediate committal on | both charges, the warrants to run conj currently. William McLood was fined £25 for j betting in Queen Street.
