ADMIRAL DEWEY. NEW YORK. Jan. K. Admiral Dewey is dead. Admiral Dewey, th e idol of the Arae- | riean Navy. was born at Montpelier, Vermont, on December 20, 1837. After being educated at the Naval Academy h 0 entered the United States navy in 1858, and saw service during the American Civil War, serving on the Mississippi River ,in i'arragut "s from 18til to 1563. After passingthrough the various grades he became a commodore in 18U0, and while in command of the Asiatic squadron in IS9S he fought the action of Manila Bay, defeating and destroying the Spanish fleet. It was Admiral Dewey who, at a time when relations between Britain and United States were strained, made use of the now famous expression, ''Blood is thicker than water. London University for over thirty years. William De Morgan was engaged in artistic pursuits until 1906, when he surprised the • novel-reading public by a remarkably clever story of humour, character and observation, entitled "Joseph Vance."
