Isolation was increasingly hard on the country, and food difficulties were causing the greatest distress; but measures were taken to ensure that none starved. Hard months wore still ahead. Direct taxation yielded sixty million marks above the estimated increase of hundred millions The Budget estimates a large increase in [direct taxation. 090 million marks had been paid for indemnification for devastation in East Prussia.
