PEACE OVERTURES.
WALL STREET ENQUIRY. A STARTLING ALLEGATION. , WASHINGTON, Jan. 15. At the Senate’s leakage enquiry. Senator Lawson named Secretary McAdoo (President Wilson’s son-in-law) as the Cabinet officer who was concerned in the leak. He declared that the chairman of the Senate’s rules committee tclj him Count Bcrnstqrff profited to the extent of two million dollars, but he did not believe this statement. Mr McAdoo declares that the rumour connecting him with the leakage is a shameless and wanton lie. (The inquiry is being held to ascertain who divulged to Wall Street the contents of President Wilson’s note).
GERMANY APPEALS TO HER SOCIALISTS. AMSTERDAM, Jau 15. The Times’ correspondent says the “Vorwaerts” has been allowed to publish an appeal to the German Socialists to unitedly approach Socialists elsewhere to induce the belligerents to enter into peace negotiations.
BERNSTORFF’S HUMOUR. LONDON, Jan 16. With a view of cheering up Berlin, at the adhesion of another neutral to President Wilson’s Note, Count Bernstorff wirelessed to Germany the text of China’s reply, which ventures to declare that the war has probably affected China’s interest more seriously than any other neutrals. China is prepared, after the war, to join in assuring respect for the principle of the equality of nations to relieve them from the perils of wrong and violence.
