A NOXIOUS GERMAN SPY.
One of the most noxious of the many German spies in London during the last twenty years was the notorious Baron Eckhardstein, who married a charming English lady, who fortunately got rid of him. Eckhardstein spent much of his time strolling around the clubs and newspaper offices, picking up gossip for the Kaiser. Latterly he drank heavily and made himself so offensive at one particular club, which ought to have kicked him out, that a certain rule as to late attendance at night had to be altered. Eckhardstein, with Prince Henry of Prussia, lias been one of the chief leaders of the Cruelty-to-Britisb-officer-Prisoners in-Germany Movement. It has been his special delight to visit officers whom he knew when in London and insult them in their captivity. A distinguished French officer who escaped recently describes a. particularly loathsome scene between Eckhardstein and an English officer prisoner, a former London friend. Prince Henry’s behaviour in regard to a Nauheim naval officer interned is not sufficiently remembered.
