ROTORUA FATALITIES.
GIRL AND BOY DROWNED. ROTORUA, Jan 15. May Day monel, aged 17, a niece of Dr. Pomare. was drowned in Lake Ro* toiti, at the mouth of the Ohau Channel, on Saturday afternoon. She and three of Dr Romaic's children went for a swi.m, while Mrs Pomare and friends were on the bank, and Mr. B. M. Wilson, the deceased's brother and others, were fishing from a launch close by. The girl apparently became exhausted trying to swim into the channel against the current. Her brother went to her assistance, but got into difficulties himself. Two others jumped into the water, and the launch was brought to the spot promptly. By this time, however, the girl had sunk. Dr. Pomare’s ter. aged 13, also got into difficulties, but managed to keep afloat till thelaunch came up and rescued her. The body of May Daymond was recovered on Sunday morning. Leslie Simpson, 13 years of age, sou of Mr. John Simpson, an employee of the Tourist Department, was drowned in Lake Rotorua, near the Postmaster Baths, on Sunday morning. He was playing in the water and slipped into a deep hole. His brother attempted to save him, but could not. The body was recovered shortly afterwards.
