The coai exports from Newcastle for .the past year were 2,037,508 tons, a decrease of 1,065,669 tons. The exports to New Zealand decreased by 145,000 tons. The overseas exports totalled 604,685 tons, as compared with 1,168,589 the previous year. Mr. Suttor, the Trade Commissioner to the East, has estimated that the coal trade to the East has lost ten million pounds in the past few years through strikes! MELBOURNE, Jan 12. A deputation of poultry breeders, which was received by the Minister of Customs (Mr Archibald) complained' that the importation of Japanese and Chinese eggs had so increased that it Vas ruining the local industry. The deputation asked for a prohibitive duty, and that imported eggs should be branded. The minister promised careful consideration, .particularly in view of the policy of increasing Australia's productivity after the war. An announcement has been made by the Prime Minister (Mr. W. M. Hughes) that an advance of 2/6 per bushel on the new season's wheat will be made to farmers on Monday. This advance will aggregate a payment of £15,000,000. The cash payments on last season's pooled wheat so far amount to £15,908,000, while shipments not yet drawn upon represent £5.002,000. The price of wheat for flour for export to New Zealand during January has been increased to 5/6 per bushel on the trucks. Received 10.30. SYDNEY, Jan. 15. A private cable from Dover reports the death of Lady Siratchley, widow of Sir Peter Seratchley, formerly military adviser to Australasia. The Government proposes to guarantee farmers a minimum of 3/- per bushel for next season \s wheat, in order to assure that none will lose money. A city alderman, speaking at a publie meeting of protest against Government retrenchment, states that fifty to sixty thousand will be thrown idle early this year. BRISBANE, j au . 15.
