FRENCH SOLDIER HERO.

SINGLE-HANDED DRIVES BACK GERMANS. A CLEVER RUSE Received 10.15. PARIS, Jan 14. A French general on the Somme presented the Military Medal and Czgjjes to a private of his battalion for relieving a French trench when the Germans attacked* The private awaited the German wave until it was thirty yards distant, and fired, killing six; the second wave advanced, and was similarly received, but the Germans gradually surrounded the post. The private dashed out, shouting "come on men!' 'as if leading troops. The Germans hastily retired, but returned when they saw they had been fooled, and were mowed down with 75s', which the private's bravery enabled to arrive. Subsequently the private was found at his post badly wounded.
