LONDON, Jan 7. At a dinner at the French Embassy, in honour of Allied representatives, toasts were pledged to the Allies for closest union for decisive victory. ZURICH, Jan 5. The latest German ruse to secure food is advertising extensively in Swiss papers that Swiss subjects in Germany are allowed to receive an 11pound parcel of food weekly. German mistresses pay Swiss servants handsomely for this food. LONDON, Jan 6. A wireless German official message says: The Russians attacked and penetrated positions in the regions between the coast of Mitau-Riga High Road. We are counter-attacking. East African official:—Pursuing the retreating enemy in the Rufiji Valley, we occupied a camp on the Tshogowali river, and reached Kibimbaje, north of the bank cf the Rufjji. The enemy were, holding the south bank. The enemy were severely handled in the Mgeta Valley. We engaged, eastward of Infirika, the enemy retreating towards Mahenge. A wireless Russian official message says:—We attacked and occupied a position south-east of Kalntzen, southeast of Riga. NEW YORK, Jan 5. The "Times" learns that the Germans are forcing the civilian population of occupied portions of Belgium and France to do distinctly milita>y work, such as digging and preparing trenches, laying electric wires for mili tary purposes, and preparing ground for wire entanglements.
