GERMAN GOLD COLLECTION.

ORNAMENTAL CERTIFICATES FOR OBEDIENT CITIZENS. The German Imperial Bank has now opened special branches throughout the country where citizens following the Empress’s example, can exchange gold objects for paper money, A fortnight ago the Lokalanzeiger, for the first time announced this scheme, explaining its object to be an increase in the stock of gold at the Imperial Bank in order to improve the rate of exchange in neutral countries, where it was falling alarmingly against Germany.

A notice in the Deutsc-h Tageszeitung proves this explanation to be false. This paper says that the pro, ceeds of the voluntary collection will serve as a guarantee for hank notes to treble the amount of the proceeds. Consequently paper money amounting to thrice the value collected in gold will be added to the £368,500,000 in notes now in currency.

The German papers are publishing pictures of iron watch chains which will he sold for 2/6 to- citizens who have given gold objects in exchange for paper money, enabling them to show that they have done their bit. Likewise an ornamental certificate is being handed to citizens who have exchanged 200 marks in gold for paper.
