SHORTAGE OF LABOUR.

CONSCEIPTIbN FORESHADOWED. HAMILTON, Jan. 3. . The shortage of labour for necessary industries, particularly farming, as revealed at the recent sittings of the Military Service Boards, was referred to by Dr McNab (Minister of Justice and Marine) in conversation with a "Star" representative yesterday. Dr McNab foreshadowed, at an early date, the conscription of labour for carrying on industries necessary to the country's welfare, and declared that when such a scheme was brought forward it would doubtless have application to all males, irrespective of age, and would not merely apply to men rejected for active service" and retained for duty at home. Such a scheme would have been impossible at the beginning of the war, but now the necessity was becoming recognised.
