RANGIWAEA
(From our own Correspondent)
The Rangiwaea school and settlers' picnic eventuated on Boxing Day Ideal weather favoured a large and representative gathering of old and young. Judging by the genuine reciprocal greetings extended to one and all, everyone enjoyed a pleasant day's outing.
The children's races were keenly competed for, and all received a prize or toys. The married ladies' race produced some merriment, as did the
married men's. A dead heat resulted, the run off leaving the heels over head man behind. The gathering reassembled in the hall to partake of refreshment and other good things so kindly prepared and supplied" by the good ladies of the block.
The chairman of the School Committee, Mr. McCann. before present-
ing the merit prizes to the pupils, con gratulated the parents on the marked progress attained in all standards during the last term, showing conclusively the high tone and true discipline brought about by the present teacher. The book prizes give n out were well and carefully selected, according to standards, and no child was omitted.
The children's agriculture garden plants were so keenly contested, that three judges were unable to separate one from the five plots, and so awarded equal honours to all, a small cash prize being the reward of each.
No dance was held, owing to the heavy rai„ which fell in the evening, making the roads unpleasant and com bined with darkness prevented the young folks attending. Apart from this I vote the Rangiwaea picnic a thorough success.
