FIRES.
' SERIOUS OUTBREAK AT AUCK- ; . LAND. AUCKLAND, Dec, 25. i A fire occurred early this morning in Smeeton's Ltd., shop in Queen street, ; doing damage to the extent of several I thousands sterling. A large stock of groceries was more or less damaged by | the fire, which originated in the elec- | trie lift well, and burned through four floors, a portion of e aeh of which collapsed. Although the fire was confined to one portion of the building, the whole stock, which was valued at £25,000, was more or less damaged by the water os smoke. The insurances are not known, but it i s understood that the stock ia covered in ten companies. j BIG FIRE AT WELLINGTON. WELLINGTON. Dec. 24. j A fire in a brick three-storey build- | ing off Herbert street, at midnight, I gutted the top floor, occupied by Urie I waterproof clothing manufacturer and | badly damaged the first floor ocupied by Ishael Solomons, clothing manufacturer. The ground floor, occupied by Aubrey Gualtes, malthoid roofing manufacturer, was flooded, but apparently escaped , damage by fire. The building is own|ed by Edward Reeves. The fire apparently started on the top floor. Tho only insurances known at present are small amounts in the Northern and Guardian offices on Solomons' stocks.
