HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT.

The Department of Agriculture, Industries and Commerce has received the following cablegram, dated London, December 6, 1916. from the High Commissioner for New Zealand. (Note: Quotations, unless otherwise specified, are average market prices on spot): Meat. —New Zealand mutton and lamb are in active demand, owing to short supplies of all descriptions of frozen meat and Home killed mutton. New Zealand mutton, per ib., Byd; ewe mutton, 8d; Argentine mutton, Sf'd; Dutch mutton, small supplies, New Zealand lamb, 9;>d; Australian lamb, small supply, heavyweight 9id; Argentine lamb, 9d; New Zealand bull beef, hinds fores 7d; Argentine chilled beef, hinds forces Sid; American pork, 9 id.

Butter.—The market closed firmer, with, more inquiry. The demand is

in excess of the supply. Danish 220 s to 2225; American creamery, 201 s to 2035; Australian 20Gs to 208 s; unsalted 208 s to 2125; New Zealand, small supply, but market firm, 210 s to 2145; unsalted 214 s to 2165; Dutch 208 s to 2125; Argentine 206 s to 20Ss; unsalted 210 s to 2125. Cheese.—The market continues firm. Canadian, coloured 312 sto 1355; white, 130 s to 1325; English Cheddar, coloured, 136 s to 140 s; States Flats, white 124 s to 128 s; coloured, 124 s to 1275; Dutch Cheddar, steady demand, 122 s to 141 s; New Zealand, no business doing. In order to give relief to consignees the Board of Trade have decided to make an advance to them against documents at the rate of 8£ per lb., with regard to commandeered cheese ex Arawa, pending settlement |of price. Notice to this effect has : been posted on a board at the Home I Foreign Produce Exchange.

Hemp.—The market is firm, and prices continue to advance. It is reported that owing to freight difficul,ty New Zealand offerings are very small, and that buyers are cautious, in anticipation of accumulated stocks coming forward later. The market is speculative. Quotations are nominal. Good fair New Zealand hemp,, per ton, £59 ss; fair £55; Government graded fair Manila £6O; caorse £SB; Janu-ary-March shipment, good fair New Zealand £56; fair £53; Government graded fair Manila £59; coarse £56., The output of hemp at Manila for the week ended last Saturday was 28,000 bales.

Wheat. —The marke 4 : 5s fi-"n and there is a general and active demand, but Government offerings are small. Oats.—The market remains firm. There is a good demand for all descriptions. New Zealand 41. Wool. —The market is firm.
