I They protest against what they term Jan insolent attempt to discredit the ; maker of modeim Greece. While the Government professes to be carrying out the Entente's demands, Reservists continue to maltreat Venizclists. THE MESOPOTAMLAN CAMPAIGN. FIGHTING ON THE HAL LONDON, Dec. 18. An official mesage states that Gcneral Maude intended to hold the Hai Riven. He bombarded the Turkish positions witli good results. The British cavalry discovered that the Turks were constructing a bridge over the Tigris, six miles westward of Kut. Our casualties were inconsiderable. A GERMAN VAUNT. COLLAPSE NOW IMPOSSIBLE. LLOYD GEORGE'S ABILITY ADMITTED LONDON, Dec. 18. Horr Stresemann,, a member of the Reichstag, speaking at Cologne, "declared that no German collapse was possible after the Roumanian successes. He admitted that the Germans had underestimated Mr Lloyd George's ability for producing vast quantities of munitions. Germany's merchant submarines had provided a rubber supply for the military needs of many months. SERBS IN AUSTRIA. EMACIATED AND WRETCHED. LONDON, Dec. 18. The Serbian Legation reports that an escaped Russian priest describes the Servian prisoners in Austnia as being weak and emaciated, and that they are reduced to searching for roots. He never saw a more wretched set of men. THE FALLING BIRTH RATE. IN GERMANY AND AUSTRIA. Received 11.25. BERLIN, Dec 19. There is a prodigious decline in the birth rate in Austria and Germany,, arousing the utmost anxiety. IN THE AIR. AN AVIATOR KILLED. Received 11.35 PARIS, Dec. 19. Lieut. Beauchamp ,cabled on Nov, IS as having been killed in an aerial duel at Douaumont, was the aviator who raided Essen on September 23. PRICE OF WHEAT FIXED. Received 11.55 LONDON, Dec. 19. In the House of Commons, Mr Albert Stanley, President of the Board of Trade, said the Government intended to guarantee a fixed price for wheat for the season 1916-17.
