AN EXTRAORDINARY MEETING

HUSBAND GIVES HIS WIFE TO A SAILOR. Esther Amelia Coward, sentenced at the Old Bailey to one day's imprisonment for bigamy, told a remarkable story in her defence. She said that her husband was very cruel to her, and drove her and her two children from home. She then met the man with whom she is now living very happily—a sailor in the Royal Navy. "We were both walking along High Street, Battersea, one day," she said, when my husband came along and said, "Do you know that is my lawful wife?' The sailor Tcplied that he was aware of the fact. "Is she happy?" the husband asked. "She doesn't look unhappy does she?" replied the sailor. '' I don't know about that, but if she is then you can have her," replied the husband.

The woman's story of her husband's cruelty was borne out by the police.
