LETTER FROM LONDON.

SOME SIDELIGHTS The following extracts of more than usual interest are taken from a letter just received by a well-known nui resident from a friend in the Old Country:—■ "It is really scandalous how some 'brave' mortals can get exemption oven here. There was a short time wo an estimate of the number of men with exemptions—something like 1,600,000. "The invasion of Roumania is undoubtedly the outcome of more blundering here in London." (This was written six weeks ago, and is certainly interesting in the light of recent cables telling of Mr Lloyd George's disgust at the dilatoriuess of the British Government) . "London is a dark placo at night; it is almost imperative to stop at home so far as convenience is concerned. It is absolutely no satisfaction to be out. It is really marvellous how accidents can be avoided with motor cars carrying so little light. There is one thing to be said about these Zeppelin raids—they don't frighten London; they only make it more furious. "As regards the end of the war, I think I am right in saying that it will be a whole year yet at the very least | unless the secret influence which is in evidence here can bring about a compromised peace. It is really scandalous, but it is absolutely true that such a party does exit.'' "It is an eye-opener to come to London and hear little tit-bits of the way things are done here. You would be amazed at the amount of political scandal in the papers. "I don't know whether you noticed in the papers that the Guards took Tiers. It is an untrue statement on the part of the papers. The New Zcalanders were supposed to have taken only a portion of it, but they took the place all on their own."
