THE FIGHT FOR VERDUN. To form a just appreciation of the magnitude of this war, one has but to read Commandant Civieux’s “resume” of the last six months. On the 22nd inst the fight for Verdun entered upon a period which, in point of duration, equalled the entire campaign of 187071. It is worth noting that, during the whole of that war, the German losses were 28,271 killed or died of wounds, the wounded numbering 88, 484 —a total casualty list of 116,755. Taking the estimated German sacrifice of human life on the Verdun front alone, it works out at a figure five times larger than that sustained forty six years ago by the whole German army. If the Kaiser based his possible losses for his 1914 (long-delayed) “military promenade” to Paris on past figures, the four million or so of Germans placed “hors de combat,” with the French capital and Verdun definitely out of his reach, cannot well inspire him with confidence in the future. His “great work” is crumbling. Did not Bismarck predict so much?

The Post Office authorities announce that a letter addressed to a soldier in care of the General Post Office, Melbourne, and intended to be retained at that office until delivered, must contain in the address the soldier’s number, and the name of his unit, and it must be superscribed “To be left until called for. ” ' If this superscription is omitted the letter will be forwarded to the front at wihch the soldier’s particular unit stationed.
