TOMMY AND THE CAPTIVES.
One of the absurd sights of the Sonime battle, the Times' war correspondent says, is to see the alacrity with which prisoners come down under a ridiculously small but sturdy khaki figure, very dirty, ragged, and disreputable, but full of pride and cheerfulness, in charge of a long string of Germans, almost every man taller than himself. On occasions the guards have been know to go on ahead to show the way, confident that the flock will come obediently after. On the roadside a day or two back, a British sentry had handed his rifle and bayonet to one of the prisoners so that the latter, might give an exhibition of the German bayonet drill, which he did while the unarmed guard looked interestedly on. But, as a sergeant said, "Lord bless you, sir! the last, thing these men want is to get away again.'' It was undoubtedly true.
