TO THE FRONT VIA AUSTRALIA.
If an Australian in London wants to enlist in the Australian Forces he can only do so by returning to Australia. This strange and wonderful regulation was mentioned by an official from the Passport Office when Samuel Micr Rahpacl, aged 20, an optician, was charged at Marlborough Street Police Court as an absentee. In Ms defence it was said that the Foreign Office had granted him a passoprt to go back to Australia to enlist. Mr Mead: Can’t he enlist in the Australian Forces here? It seems ridiculous in these times of stress and trouble f or a man to have to go to Australia to enlist in the Forces there and thus waste valuable time, as the journey there and back would take about eight weeks or more. He discharged the man, and suggested retaining his passport for a week while the authorities tried to find a way out.
