THE EDUCATION SYSTEM.
I‘R()TCST BY r CATHOLICS. . CHRISTCHURCH, Nov 10. A big meeting of Roman Catholics last night in the Colosseum,, presided over by Bishop Brodie, discussed the education system. Addresses were delivered by Mr M. Doyle, Timaru; Messrs M. Guinness and H. F. Doogan, Greymouth: Father Ainsworth, Napier; Mr 8. Ryan, Rangiora; Mr D. L. Popplewill, Gore; Mr J. Kennedy, Geraldine; and Bishop Brodie. The following motion was carried: That a system of education under which one-seventh of the tax-payers are excluded from participating in the benefits is neither a just nor a nation-, a) system, and this meeting expresses the hope that the Government will take into consideration the desirability of making the New Zealand education system a national one by recognising and incorporating in it all registered schools certified by State inspectors as efficient, as has been done in England, Canada, and other parts of the Empire. A further motion was unanimously passed, “that this meeting protests against, injustices inflicted upon CathoIci children by exclusion from the full benefits of scholarships for free places, medical inspection and free swimming tuition, benefits for which Catholic parents, as taxpayers, contribute their full quota, and calls on the Department to remove this peculiarly unjust discrimination. Another motion was: “That this meeting expresses appreciation of the good work accomplished by the Catholic Federation, and pledges itself to increase the membership and further its interest in every way. Bishop Brodie paid a tribute to Bishop Julius for giving half his cpiseo-
pfti Income towards the education of
Christian children, and added, “As.a Catholic bishop I shall shake him by the hand and say, “Let us take the platform together to show that we as Christians are not fighting against one another. Let it be said that we are friends in a common cause for the advancement of Christianity. ’ ’
