KAISER'S FALLEN AMBITION.
One of the soaring ambitions of the Kaiser —that his name should for ever be given to the highest peak of Kilimanjaro—falls with the fall of the capital of German East Africa. This mighty peak of the great mountain, 19< 312 feat, became Kaiser William Spitze" by the grace of Lord Salisbury. When East Africa was being partitioned in 1886, it was conveyed to the British Government that Prince William of Prussia, now the Kaiser, had a burning desire that the great summit first seen by the German Johannes Eebmann should fall within the German frontier line. Being a good-natured statesman, Lord Salisbury consented to the straight line across the great mountain so that the heart's desire of the Prince might be attained. No doubt the native vocabulary will find an even more musical name for the "spitze " of the Silver Mountain. .; ■ ■ 1 • :•■
