MR MASSEY AND SIR J. WARD.
\ A WEEK SPENT IN FRANCE. LONDON, Nov 5. Mr Massey and Sir Joseph Ward have returned to London. Mr Massey, in a statement to the Australian Press Association, remark- j 1 ed: We spent a toll week in France j looking into conditions as they exist j at the front, more particularly in regard to New Zealand troops . The New Zealanders are in good heart, and are cheerfully confident, but the weather and the approach of winter make it almost impossible to continue operations on a large scale at present. Naturally there is a groat deal of discomfort, but everything is being done to render winter quarters as comfortable as possible. During our visit, added Mr Massey, we had au opportunity of conferring with Eir Douglas Haig and others of the General Staff, and whilst matters are going very well, no one whose opinion is worth having ever suggested the possibility of th e 'var ending for a ; considerable time.
