It throws the weight of the body on the front part of the foot, thus cramping the toes and giving rise to bunions and corns. A wonjan suffering from these troubles cannot escape nerve irritation, nor can she walk with her natural grace.
The women munition-makers who work in the “Danger section” at the different arsenals in England, are known as the “Golden Girls,” for after three months their bodies and faces become the colour of gold dust. These brave women daily undermine their constitutions, ruin their health ana looks, and think nothing of it as long as the men in the trenches are kept supplied with ammunition—for them they will sacrifice anything. These girls are also called “Canaries,” and “The Wounded "Women Tommies of the Munition Factories.” It says much for the spirit of the Englishwoman when one realises that as one body of women leave the works broken in health, hundreds of others are ready waiting To take their place.
