AUSTRALIAN REFERENDUM.
POLLING TO-DAY. PUBLIC HOLIDAY DECLARED. HOTELS CLOSED FOR WEEK-END SYDNEY, Oct 27. Tense excitement prevails, in view of to-morrow’s momentous question. A* general public holiday has been declared. Hotels will be closed from to-night until Monday, THE CHANNEL TUNNEL. MATTER IN A NEW LIGHT. LONDON, Oct 26. Mr. Asquith, replying 'to a deputation, promised that the committee of Imperial Defence would review the Channel Tunnel proposal in all its aspects in the light of the experience gained in the war. He added that in response to a deputation in 1913 he directed the Defence Committee to rc consider they tunnel's strategic aspects. The committee in July 1914 decidec. by a majority, adversely to the scheme. He agreed with to-day’s deputation that the war experience was a new factor of immeasurable importance for statesmen and military and naval experts. He promised to refer the matter to the War Committee or Defence Committee.
