TUESDAY, OCTOBER 24, 1916. "OUR DAY" IN TAIHAPE.
(With which is incorporated The Tal bapo Post and Wahnarino News.)
The collective mind of Taihape all seemed bent on the one purpose yesterday, to make "Our Day" as great a success as possible; and what more noble work could Labour Day be pu* to than in devoting it to striving after that which is going to relieve pain, suf fering, and save many a brave life that is being offered that we may retain our homes free from German domination? The townspeople acquitted themselves admirably, in fact they all seemed to be engaged upon the one supreme purpose, for, apart from tne busy scene on the recreation ground, and an occasional bar>d-of minstrels scouting around for stray shilling:,, the streets were deserted. The grati-1 fying aspect is that "Our Day" was a •huge success; between three hundred and four hundred pounds are already in hand, and the never-tiring Secretary, Rev. W. F. Stent, informed the large audience at the Three Stars Theatre last night that he hoped" the amount would ultimately swell to tne Ave hundred pounds that he set out to find. No onlooker at yesterday's effort could help admiring the splendid organisation and the zeal and unity of purpose of the great army of 7 workers; all minds ran in the one groove, that which extends to the battlefields where men are falling every minute of the day and night, and if every person who gave could follow their gift to the bedside? o p the men to whom it will brine:, perhaps life itself, and at least a joy that passeth all understanding, to think that those he left ot horns. sixteen thousand mil 33 away, are ncr
forgetting them as they lay there physically helpless, but with a mine: that is with their ,own people in their Homeland, they would strive to make their offerings twice as much. Taihape has done its duty with few exceptions, although it was noted that a few wealthy men had not given, still, they are so few as to render the fact noticeable, and these, even, may have been in the Rev. Secretary's mind when he said he hoped the amount of Taihape's offering would'reach five hundred pounds. Whatever part was taken by individuals in the great tunc tion, whether plucked or plucker, the enjoyment was unquestionable, for it is doubtful whether a happier, mors
contented or busier gathering ever met on the recreation ground, and this spirit was abundantly evident right up to the close of the day's work at nearly eleven o'clock last night, when the great audience, at the request of the Rev. W. F. Stent, gave three thundering cheers to Mr. Nichoils for giving the entire entertainment over to the Red Cross Society, to make what they
could of it. "Our Day" is now in the past, and we are pleased to know that our town recognised its duty.
