A sensation has been caused by thepublication of the minutes of a secret meeting of the American Independence Conference, an organisation composed of prominent litish Americans and Genman-Amerieans. at which a report was received of an. ultimatum to be presented to Mr Hughes, demanding that he attack Groat Britain in a public speech in exchange for election support. Hughes admits that he conferred, but denies that he entered into any agreement, although lirish-Ameri-cans and German-Americans consider an agreement was made. Eepublican managers consider this fearful revelation will seriously jeopardise Hughes' chances of election.
